LANcams.com (global) turns the devices you already own into a live camera system for your home. Point a spare phone at the bird feeder, the driveway, or the front door — then watch from any browser on your network. No apps, no accounts, no subscriptions.

Built so it can't spy on you

Your video streams directly between your own devices over your local network (WebRTC). This site only performs the introductions; the video itself never reaches our servers, is never stored, and is never visible to anyone outside your household. That's not a privacy promise you have to trust — it's how the plumbing works.

Yours to run, if you like

LANcams.com (global) is open source, and the whole thing can run on a machine on your own LAN — handy if your internet is down or you simply prefer it. But because the design keeps video local anyway, you don't need to self-host to get the privacy; using this site is the same plumbing with less setup.

How does this work?

Devices on your network send video directly to each other using WebRTC, the same technology as video calls. This server only makes the introductions ("signaling") — the video itself streams device-to-device over your local network and never passes through the server. No account, no cloud, nothing is recorded anywhere.

Cameras are only visible to devices that connect from this same public address — in other words, devices behind your own router. Different households can never see each other's cameras, and the server refuses to carry connection setup between them.

This server is running on your local network: anyone who can reach it can watch and share cameras. The trust boundary is your LAN.

Security

• The whole household is the trust unit: any device in your group can watch every camera in it. There are no per-camera passwords.
• Camera names pass through the server as setup metadata; the video does not.
• A ?room=word link overrides the automatic grouping. Treat room names like passwords — anyone who knows one can join it from anywhere, so use a long random string.
• Nothing is stored: stop sharing (or close the page) and the stream is gone.

Problems & incompatible setups

• Camera won't start: browsers only allow camera access on secure (https) pages, and only after you grant permission. On a self-hosted LAN server you must accept its certificate warning once per device.
• Tiles never connect: Wi-Fi networks with "client isolation" (hotel, café, and guest networks) block devices from talking to each other, which blocks the video path entirely.
• Two homes see each other / housemates don't: some ISPs (CGNAT) put several customers behind one public address, and mixed IPv4/IPv6 households can split apart. Use a ?room= link in both cases.
• Stream is sideways or portrait: phones send video oriented to their screen. Use 🔒 Landscape while sharing (or the ⟳ button on any tile to rotate your own view).
• Phone stops sharing when it sleeps: keep the page open; the page asks the browser to keep the screen awake, but aggressive battery savers can still kill it.
